We have found a secret place to ride

Posted by Peet Correia on

Over a period we have managed to do a number of rides which made us realise that this place has so much diversity. From stunning viewpoints, rock formations, fauna and flora, not to mention the stretch of 10km river with clean water flowing through this private game reserve.

With a multitude of gravel roads to explore there are options for beginners and more advanced riders. You can max out your heart rate on a few rocky multi pitched climbs if its what you are after. We enjoyed relaxing by the dam in the above picture after our rides. From where this picture is taken you overlook the river from a deck area with swimming pool and jacuzzi, to assist your post ride recovery.

You're in the wild, with some savanna like area's entertaining various antelope and other more bushy areas, the experience changes as the ride continues. Viewing game on a mountain bike is quite different to a normal game vehicle. Firstly the experience makes you feel more vulnerable, but at the same time you feel more part of the bush. Your senses are stimulated as you hear, smell and see the wilderness around you.

Riding in the bush takes a slightly different approach from the normal bike park or forest ride. Zebra, Kudu, Eland amongst others could stop and stare at you or run if they are caught unaware of your approaching proximity. If you encounter Buffalo, its best to turn around and change your route a little. So while riding its not just a matter of trying to pace yourself, but also to be aware of what is happening around you.

Located in the Waterberg at about 2 hours 30 minutes drive from Pretoria brings you to the 2700 hectare private game reserve Groenvley. Located on Groenvley is the luxury safari tented camp Matla Noka located on the riverbank of the Sterkrivier. From here you can enjoy a relaxing bush experience with the pleasure of riding on the endless roads of Groenvley.
